Why Hydration Matters for Photographers
Summer’s here, which usually means longer days outside with your camera. The sun’s beating down, you’re chasing good light, and honestly—it’s easy to forget to drink enough water. But it catches up with you. When you’re dehydrated, you feel it fast: low energy, a shorter fuse, and it gets harder to stay in that creative zone—especially during golden hour when you want to be at your best.
How Much Water Do You Really Need?
You’ve probably heard the “8 glasses a day” thing, but if you’re outside shooting for hours, that’s usually not enough. I have read that a better rule is to aim for about half your body weight in ounces. So if you’re around 160 pounds, shoot for roughly 80 ounces a day—and more if you’re sweating in the heat.
I'm thinking the biggest thing is not to wait until you’re thirsty. Just take a few sips here and there throughout your shoot.
Easy Ways to Stay Hydrated (Without Getting Bored)
Plain water works, but it doesn’t have to be boring. Toss in some lemon, cucumber, or berries—whatever you have on hand. It makes a difference. Coconut water is great too, especially if you’ve been out in the heat for a while. Water with electrolytes is always a good idea too!
Simple Hydration Tips for a Shoot
Staying hydrated doesn’t have to be complicated—just a little planning helps.
Bring a small cooler if you’ll be out for a while
Keep an electrolyte drink handy for really hot days
Take short breaks—sit down, drink some water, reset
If you’re heading out to shoot this summer, don’t overlook the basics. Drinking enough water keeps your energy up, your head clear, and your creativity flowing. It’s a simple thing, but it makes a big difference by the time that perfect light hits.
Stay cool out there—and happy shooting.
