Blog post description. A Simple, Cozy Oven Hot Pad
SEWING
5/1/20263 min read

If you’re new to sewing, you want a first project that feels doable—but still useful and satisfying.
A simple oven hot pad (pot holder) is one of the best places to start.
It’s small, quick, and teaches the exact skills you’ll use over and over again—straight seams, layering fabric, and topstitching. And when you’re done? You’ll use it every single day.
Why a Hot Pad Is Perfect for Beginners
Small and manageable (not overwhelming)
Uses basic straight stitching
Great introduction to layering fabric and batting
Quick finish—you can make one in under an hour
Practical (and giftable!)
What You’ll Need
2 squares of cotton fabric (about 8" x 8")
1–2 layers of batting (insulated batting like Insul-Bright is best for heat protection)
Matching thread
Pins or clips
Fabric scissors
Iron
Simple Layers
Think of this like a little fabric sandwich:
Top fabric (pretty side)
Batting (heat protection)
Bottom fabric
*Tip: If you want extra protection, use two layers of batting.
**Always use 100% cotton fabric and heat-safe batting for hot pads.
Avoid polyester materials—they can melt when exposed to high heat.
How to Sew It (Step-by-Step)
1. Layer Your Pieces
Place fabrics right sides together with batting on top or underneath (depending on your method). Pin everything in place.
2. Sew Around the Edges
Sew around all four sides with a ½" seam allowance—leave a small opening (about 2–3 inches) for turning.
3. Turn and Press
Turn your hot pad right side out through the opening.
Push out the corners gently, then press it flat with an iron.
4. Topstitch to Finish
Sew all the way around the edge to close the opening and give it a clean, finished look.
Once you’ve made one, try:
Adding a little fabric loop to hang it
Quilting simple lines across the surface
Mixing and matching seasonal fabrics
Creating a full set for your kitchen or as gifts
A Little Encouragement
This project is about learning—not perfection.
Your seams might not be perfectly straight. Your corners might be a little soft. That’s okay. You’re building skill with every stitch.
And there’s something special about pulling a hot dish from the oven using something you made yourself.
What to Try Next
After your hot pad, you’ll be ready for:
A matching oven mitt
Simple tote bags
Pillow covers
Beginner quilting projects
One small project turns into confidence—and that’s how sewing becomes something you truly love.
